An original Burmese/Myanmar mandala-style (yantra?) painting on cloth, signed by Burmese artist Maung Pa-Baean.
Mandala spirit cloth, or yantra paintings from Burma are typically commissioned by families to be used for meditation at home. They are believed to have healing and protective power and to bring good luck to the owner. It's believed their power can be enhanced by being folded and worn on the shoulder of a monk under robes and they are often found with folds lines from this practice.
The mandala itself symbolizes the Wheel of Law and the endless cycle of rebirth. Spirit cloth or yantra drawings can incorporate Hinduism, Buddhism, animism, numerology and astrology based on the emotional, spiritual and astrological needs of the person requesting the work: for example, for protection, good fortune, longevity, an improved love life, or as a reminder of the Buddhist dharma. In the end, yantra drawings are unique and fascinating works of art replete with meaning and good wishes. They are believed to invoke blessings, specific and general, from all directions of the cosmic universe.
