Description
You are bidding on a large, very rare original antique print from an 1870s French illustrated journal. It depicts two beautiful Basset Normand dogs (twisted leg basset). This is the foundation breed of themodern English Basset Hound and the Basset Artésien Normand.
The controlled breeding of the short haired basset began in France in the year 1870. From the existing Bassets, Count Le Couteulx of Canteleu fixed a utilitarian type with straight front legs known as the Chien d'Artois, whereas Mr. Louis Lane developed a more spectacular type, with crooked front legs, known as the Basset Normand. These were bred together to create the original Basset Artésien Normand.
The caption reads: Le basset a jambe twisted
It is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture area is about 6.6 x 5.9 inches, with a French caption below and text surrounding it. The text could easily be trimmed before framing.
The page is in excellent condition for its age.
There is text/photos on the back of the print.
See scan for an accurate view of the condition.
