Description
Date of January, 1969, original, size 20 ½ x 30 in., the lithographic color printing, published by the People’s Fine Art of China, the initial price of print still visible in condition. This is a Revolutionary Model Operas (RMO) propaganda poster, published in the early-middle period of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (CCR, 1966 – 1976).The background story of the poster based on a proposal celebrating, of which the eight RMO were repeatedly performed in Beijing’s six major theaters, and the mainstream medias of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), especially the People’s Daily, Guangming Daily and the magazine of Red Flag (called Liangbao Yikan, two daily publications and one magazine), simultaneously reporting in May to June, 1967.
The eight RMO were a series of shows planned and engineered by Jiangqing (1914 – 1991), the wife of Chairman Mao (1893 – 1976), during the CCR. It was the Chinese style literary reforms done by her and the purpose of which was to embody her husband Chairman Mao Zedong’s literary and artistic guideline of “the ancient serves the present, and the foreign serves the Chinese”. It was considered revolutionary and modern in terms of thematic and musical features when compared with traditional Chinese operas. The eight RMO considered among the five reformed traditional Chinese operas, two ballets and one symphonic music.
On this poster, illustrated the eight small icons of RMO, that from the left to the right, and up to down listed Shajiabang, Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, The White-Haired Girl (Ballet), Raid On The White Tiger Regiment, Shajiabang (Symphonic music), Red Detachment Of Women (Ballet), Legend Of The Ren Lantern, and On The Docks.
The poster titled The Invincible Mao Zedong Thought Illuminates The Stage Of Revolutionary Art. Central figures of Mao and Jiangqi, whom held a Red Book (Mao’s Anthology) by hands. A slogan Long Live The Total Route. Jiangqing was sentenced in 1981 and suicide in jail in 1991, short of the 25th anniversary of the CCR.
